With the current housing economy, multi-generational homes will be a prominent feature for 2024, as people are moving back in with their parents or having their parents or other family members move in with them.
“Adding separate entrances, upgrading the basement to have a second kitchen, and closing off the open floor plan to create more privacy are all trending due to multiple families living under the same roof,” says Morgan Olsen, design expert at Thumbtack.
With more grandkids living with their grandparents, the addition of custom playrooms and bunk rooms will be a must in 2024.
“Having a space with creative toy storage, indoor rock climbing walls, and foam pits seems to be helping the kids feel like they have their own space. In addition, build out custom bunk bed rooms with Jack and Jill bathrooms to maximize on space,” says Olsen.
With little kids, mudrooms are also a necessity. Anastasia Hartmann of RE/MAX Professionals Minnesota and Wisconsin, says mudrooms “are now much closer in proximity to the washer and dryer, if not in the same area.”
She says creating a multi-purpose area for your mudroom with more storage options with easy access for your cleaning duties is a homeowner’s dream. “Be sure to include hooks, shelves, cabinetry, great lighting and plumbing for a utility sink to make the most out of the space,” says Hartmann.
