Toshiba ESS to help renovate 45-MW geothermal power plant in Kenya

Toshiba Corp announced today that its unit Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corp, or Toshiba ESS, will deliver steam turbines and generators for a renovation job at a 45-MW geothermal power plant in Kenya.

Under the agreement with SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co Ltd, the new Units 1 through 3 at the Olkaria I plant will increase their output to 21 MW from the current 15 MW.

Toshiba ESS estimates it will commence delivery of the steam turbines and generators by December 2025.

Operational since 1981 by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), Olkaria I is the oldest geothermal power plant in the country.

In 2022, Toshiba ESS signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KenGen in relation to a collaboration on the operation and maintenance (O&M) of geothermal power plants located in developing countries, including East African nations outside Kenya.
